Last Saturday, we headed out to Bluemont, Virginia for a day of fun out in the Virginia countryside. With a weather report of 70s & sunny, we knew we had to make the most of this beautiful day! Out to the country we’d go. We packed up the baby gear, loaded the kiddos in the car, picked up some snacks & sandwiches and we were off!

Bluemont Vineyard
Just about an hour drive from our home in Alexandria, Bluemont Vineyard was our first stop. I’d heard of Bluemont Vineyard years ago, (it’s a popular wedding venue) so I was excited to check it out. Known as one of the prettiest vineyards in the northern Virginia area, it’s what sparked our interest in driving out to Bluemont in the first place. Little did we know how much the town of Bluemont had to offer.
When we arrived, we noticed many leaves had already fallen – peek foliage had passed. Even so, the views were stunning. Set right along a mountainside, leaves or no leaves, it’s a beautiful sight.
First, we headed to an open seating area, ordered a glass of wine and got acclimated. Once we settled in, we put our name on the list to move over to 951 Tasting Room.
951 Tasting Room, an expansive outdoor patio space with picturesque views, offered a more extensive wine menu, light bites and seasonal drinks. We slowly worked our way through the tasting, took in the views and then we were off to our next stop – Dirt Farm Brewing.
But actually, before I jump ahead, want to share just a few more cool things about Bluemont Vineyard!
Though we got a pretty good feel for the property during our visit, there’s still so much more to see and do! A few more spots on site we’d still love to see:
THE RESERVE TASTING ROOM: A second tasting room in a cozy mountain lodge. It seems to be mostly dedicated to fun events you can book in advance (see events calendar below).
THE CIDERY: Their cidery, Henway Hard Cider, would be a fun spot to visit too. Though it appears to be temporarily closed at the moment, they do still seem to be hosting cider events over that The Reserve until the cidery reopens.

Last, but not least, they offer luxury picnic packages. What a fun, unique idea!
Dirt Farm Brewing
Next up was Dirt Farm Brewing. Bill wanted to check out a brewery on our way out and I’m so glad we did. With panoramic views that rival those at Bluemont Vineyard and a fun, lively atmosphere, it was definitely worth the stop.
When we arrived, we grabbed two seats on the grass, parked the stroller in front of us and Bill popped inside to grab some beers. When he came back out, much to my surprise, he handed me a hot spiked cider – I’ll never pass up a hot cider in the fall! He had a red ale, gave it a thumb’s up and even bought a pack to go on our way out.
As we started to feel a chill in the air, we enjoyed the last hour of our day trip to the country and headed out just before sunset.
A few things to note about Dirt Farm Brewing:
Run by the same small family-owned business as Bluemont Vineyard, Dirt Farm Brewing also hosts lots of fun events throughout the year. To view their upcoming calendar, click here.
If you decide to visit, they have a full menu featuring seasonal produce from the farm – so it’s a great first stop. No need to pack a picnic. In fact, they ask to please not bring in any outside food or beverages; it’s all offered right there.
As I look back on our first trip out to Bluemont, I was pleasantly surprised to learn just how much there is to see & do in this seemingly small, rural town. We really only just scratched the surface. Tucked away along little dirt roads and hidden pathways you’ll find a wide variety of vineyards, breweries, farms. hiking trails and more.
One place we did not get to but have high on our list is Great Country Farms. A part of the Bluemont Vineyard and Dirt Farm Brewing family, they offer all kinds of fun family activities: wagon rides, a farm ninja course, mazes, a barnyard as well as seasonal festivals all throughout the year. I think it will be great for our twins once they get a little older.
