The days are getting longer, the temps are getting warmer and most exciting of all, it’s almost cherry blossom season in DC! If you’re planning a day to see the blooms, below is a recommendation you may not have received before – come to Old Town! It’s so beautiful here this time of year. Below I’m sharing a few reasons why I think a stop here will be worth your while.
Why To Visit Old Town Alexandria

No 1. Old Town Alexandria Is Also in Bloom
During peak bloom, you’ll find flowering trees, pretty spring wreaths, tulip filled flowerpots, secret gardens and so much more all throughout. The colorful row homes, brick sidewalks and cobblestone streets make for a beautiful backdrop to it all.
You can find cherry blossom trees in a few different spots throughout town:
- The 100 block of Wolfe Street
- Founders Park
- Ford’s Landing
- River Farm
No 2. It’s the Perfect Starting Point
With multiple options for getting into the city and just about 20 minutes from the tidal basin (by car), Alexandria makes for a great starting point. Wander around Old Town then head into the city or vice-versa.
Take a Cherry Blossom Water Taxi Cruise
Water taxis line up right at the Old Town Alexandria waterfront. There are a couple of different cruises to choose from:
- A Ride to Georgetown
- A Ride to The Wharf
- A Monuments Ride
Along the way, see all the pretty blooms by boat 🌸!
Sign-up For a Guided Bike Tour
Pedego Bikes offers guided tours from Alexandria down to see all the pretty Cherry Blossoms in DC. How fun is that?
Take The Metro
If you’re staying in Old Town, somewhat close to King Street, getting to the metro is a breeze. Walk over to the King Street Metro Station or ride the King Street Trolley and be dropped off right there.
No 3. Great Places to Stay, Dine & Be Entertained
With great hotels, restaurants, bars and more, Alexandria is a great place to stay, dine and be entertained!
Hotels
If you are visiting from out of town and looking for a place to stay, you can’t go wrong with The Alexandrian or Hotel Indigo. Both fun boutique hotels, they’ll put you right in the middle everything.
Hotel Indigo is right at the waterfront near the water taxis.
The Alexandrian is right in the middle of town, just a short walk down to water taxis.
If you’re looking to stay closer to the metro, the Marriott Carlyle (perfect for families staying an extended period of time, most rooms I believe include a kitchen in-suite) or The Westin are great options too.
Dining & Entertainment
Many of the local restaurants offer Cherry Blossom themed specials throughout the season. The Visit Alexandria site typically provides the most up-to-date information regarding restaurant, bar and entertainment offerings.
